Flybe at Exeter Airport
Flybe today opened a new hangar at Exeter Airport, creating some 500 new jobs in the local area.
The opening was led by Sir Digby Jones, the director general of the Conferederation of British Industry.
The new structure was thought to have cost some £12 million to construct and represents another stage in the development of Exeter Airport as a base for Flybe, the budget airline that operates low cost, no frills flights from a number of UK regional airports to more than 40 European destinations.
The hangar was the first to be built at Exeter Airport since the 1940s and will be used by Flybe to service its own aircraft as well as those of rival operators. Flybe's Chief Executive, Jim French, said that: "The government has described it as one of the best engineering centres of excellence in the country. We are one of the key employers in the South West and our value to the local economy has been estimated beyond £135million".
According to current plans outlined by the airline, it intends to increase staffing levels in the city to include some 1,200 employees.
